During my time at Auckland Council my portfolio included urban design where I learned about the concept of a city built in the human scale. Auckland, and far too many cities around the world, were built for cars rather than people. Looking after the communications for street upgrades in Federal Street and O’Connell Street I saw first-hand the obsession many Aucklander’s have with needing to drive and park in the middle of their city centre – something which most Europeans would never expect to do. The transformation of Auckland’s city centre through projects such as shared spaces was a fascinating portfolio to work on. It has changed my understanding and view of placemaking and people spaces for eternity.
